Ronald Reagan stood by the window of the elegant Swiss chateau at Fleur d'Eau waiting of the arrival of Mikhail Gorbechev. The world was watching, and hundreds of reporters had gathered outside to record this first encounter between the two men. Reagan looked out onto the circular driveway and flash the reporters a thumbs-up.

Peter Schweizer, Reagan's War, Chapter XXI: The Aging Lion vs. The Young Tiger

New and Exciting:

Boomsday - Christopher Buckley

- Finally, some vengeance against the damn Baby Boomers! With the help of Washington's greatest spin doctor, a blogger and a politician try to ride the issue of euthanasia for Boomers (they call it "Transitioning") all the way to the White House, over the forceful objections of the Religious Right and, of course, Baby Boomers, who are deeply offended by demonstrations on the golf courses and their retirement resorts. Destined to become a classic. (Pub: 4.1.2007, Twelve )

Carlo Mollino: Photographs 1956-1962 - Fulvio Ferrari and Napoleone Ferrari

- Published back in February, this Museo Casa Mollino import is a fascinating look into some of Mollino's nude portraits that have sprung the question of whether he should or should not even be referred to as a "photographer."

What I've Been Reading Lately:

Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer -
Sheriff David Reichert

- Far deeper of a perspective than the Anne Rule book that came out around the same time, Chasing the Devil confirms a lot of my Green River Killer curiosities that developed while watching the Court TV trial back in November of 2003.

The Murderer - Georges Simenon
-Set in a small town on the flat plains of Holland, under a gray sky, Dr. Kuperus...a local physician...is propelled into action when he learns that his wife is being unfaithful. And to make matters worse, his wife's lover is the town's leading citizen, a nobleman, witty and elegant... everything that Dr. Kuperus is not.

The Nightclub - Georges Simenon

- Going back to his roots, Simenon delves deep into the realm of his alcohol and sexual compulsions with this story of a nineteen-year-old Belgian cub reporter still living under his parents' roof but also mingling with a wrong crowd of crooks and bar whores.

The Classics:

Citizen Vince - Jess Walters

- Walters' epic, magnum opus.

Outerbridge Reach - Robert Stone

- A beautiful novel that begins with the happiest moments and ends with the worst.

Rabbit is Rich - John Updike

- Easily the best of all Rabbit Angstrom books. It'll only take you until page twenty or so before you'll be pondering cunt as a flavor of ice cream.

Easter Parade - Richard Yates

- Revolutionary Road is a close second to this piece of brilliance.

Veronica - Mary Gaitskill

-
Her best yet.

L. Ron Hubbard: Messiah or Madman? - Bent Corydon and L. Ron Hubbard, Jr. a.k.a. Ronald DeWolf

- The REAL story of the Scientologists. You'll find that Hubbard's story is more reminiscent of Shakespeare than Jesus Christ. That one took me by surprise.

Black Sun: The Brief Transit and Violent Eclipse of Harry Crosby - Geoffrey Wolff

- The ULTIMATE biography for those who normally only read fiction. And others, of course, as well.

The Rifles - William T. Vollmann

- Bill's Arctic explorations. King Crimson even makes a cameo. I'm dead serious.

Trance - Christopher Sorrentino

- One of the most underrated books of last year. A fictionalization of SLA vs. Hearst.

Houdini: A Musical - Muriel Rukeyser

- Nothing on Earth can Hold Houdini a Prisoner...not even the American musical.

Hamletmachine... - Heiner Muller

- "I was Hamlet. I stood at the shore and talked with the surf BLABLA, the ruins of Europe in back of me."
